More research on your name, Abigail. The sermon was about how Abigail was a beautiful, wise and intelligent lady, who happened to be married to a rich, foolish man.
Isn't it cool that your name is associated with a beautiful, wise and intelligent lady?? Of course, we all think you are beautiful. And we hope you grow to be wise and intelligent. But the story goes way further than that. PLEASE listen to your Mommy and Daddy, and don't marry a rich fool. Rich, OK. Fool, not so good. Especially if he ended up being arrogant and selfish, too. But that is for another day ....
Abigail had found out that David's "army" was coming to kill not only her husband, but also all the men who worked for him. David was angry because Nabal (the rich fool) had insulted him, and refused to help him, despite the fact that David and his men had helped Nabal. Also, David had been anointed as king, which was a big deal in those times. How could Nabal not know who he was??
When Abigail heard what had happened, and what was about to happen, she decided to go meet David and his men. She understood that David's"army" would kill all the men, even the ones who had nothing to do with the bad attitude and selfishness that Nabal showed. So she took a bunch of food and provisions, and met David and his men before he got to where the husband was.
Then she asked David to blame her for her husband's rudeness! I sure couldn't have done that! Most likely, I'd have been saying "Here, take all this stuff, then go ahead and do whatever you want!" But Abigail knew that if David did kill all these innocent men, it would be hanging over his head all during his time as king, and that would be bad for him. Also, she realized that saving the innocent men was a good thing, too. Abigail was a woman of good understanding. And good character.
What could be better than growing up to be a wise, intelligent, beautiful woman of good character and understanding?? Today, Miss Lady, these are my wishes for you --
